[An Oral Thin Film (OTF) is a drug delivery system that consists of a thin layer of mainly hydrophilic polymer designed to be rapidly disintegrated or dissolved in the mouth upon contact with the saliva without drinking water or chewing it. It allows a fast release of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). A wide range of polymers can be used in OTFs. They are generally hydrophilic and water-soluble, but can also be more hydrophobic and water-insoluble. OTFs were introduced into the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph.Eur.) with supplement in April 2012 and are subordinated to the oromucosal preparations.
